Critical Reflection on Formal Oral Presentation [27 November 2017]

Critical Reflection on Formal Oral Presentation
My group, Task-Force, chose a research topic on energy conservation in SIT at Dover and came up with an implementation of Eco-Tree in the new SIT campus at Punggol. It was a steep learning curve for me as it was my first presentation after national service. Knowing that there will be more presentations ahead, there is a need for me to reflect and improve on my presentation skills and techniques.

There are definitely good and bad pointers of my presentations and knowing the strength of my presentation can let me retain and apply it on my subsequent presentations. I was tasked to present on the implementation, benefits and technical specifications of the Eco-Tree and Eco-Gallery. I gave robust and concise explanation, and the audience are able to visualize how the implementation looks like. Furthermore, the pace of my presentation was good and the flow of the slides are well-transited. Overall, I feel that I have invested adequate time on the preparation, in order to make the presentation effective and engaging.

It is critical to know one’s weaknesses and I know there are room for improvements through this presentation. My eyes keep looking at the slides rather than facing the audience. This caused me to lose the attention and engagement of the audience. How I can improve it would be to memorize the pointers and rely lesser on the slides. During the Q&A sessions, I accidentally spilled some ‘Singlish’ when replying to the audience’s question. This caused me to be unprofessional. I believe I can improve through the use of less “Singlish” during casual conversations amongst friends.

In conclusion, I feel that I should learn to be confident and train myself to present without looking at the slides. I should also show more enthusiasm to catch the audience’s attention. I also think that well-rehearsed presentation can bring out the beauty of the presentation and it portray a positive image to the audience as a prepared individual.
